North Bayside Grange Contra Dance Saturday, October 25

All are welcome to enjoy a delightful evening of social dancing at the North Bayside Grange on Saturday, October 25thth from 6-9pm. Dance to great live music and expert calling. This friendly community gathering is open to singles and couples. Join the fun at the Bay Area Contra Dance, featuring three hours of congenial social dance. This monthly event is sponsored by the South Coast Folk Society. It’s a light-hearted community gathering appropriate for teens and adults. This event is free, and open to everyone age 12 up. New dancers are always welcome. No prior experience or partner is required at this alcohol- and fragrance-free event.

Contra Dancing is fun, and easy to learn, like an old-time barn dance. It’s a delightful way to socialize to beautiful, uplifting music. Come swing your partner and do-si-do to the foot-stomping music of the Celtic Bay Band. Popular caller Paul Poresky will provide a lesson for new dancers at 6:00pm, and expert calling all evening. Wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes. Please join us on the dance floor, or relax and enjoy fine music.

Many thanks to the North Bayside Grange, a wonderful dance venue, for hosting the monthly Bay Area Contra Dances. The center is open to all ages and is located at 67577 E Bay Road, North Bend, just across the bridge in Glasgow. Save the date. Doors open at 5:45, and a $5 donation would be much appreciated. Balancing these choral classics are newly composed works of Lucy Walker and Marques Garrett; Shakespeare settings by Craig Kingsbury (with actors); Haitian folk music; and fun commissioned arrangements of “April in Paris” and “It don’t mean a thing (if it ain’t got that swing)” by Jodi French.

These small gatherings are for those who practice or would like to learn about Christian contemplative, or mystical, spirituality. The meetings are open to the public, educational, supportive, and non-dogmatic, but we are currently meeting in the Ashland Public Library's Guanajuato Room, which has limited space. The Talent Gallery Artist Talks continue this coming Sunday at noon, featuring Claire Duncan and Jolene Monheim.
Come hear Claire and Jolene answer questions about beauty, transience, and human intersections with nature— all in the context of their remarkable works in the gallery.

Jonathan Luke Stevens, an Ashland-based actor and member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's repertory company, will share stories and behind-the-scenes insights of the Allen Elizabethan Theater. Stevens will discuss how history, innovation, and performance intersect at one of the nation's most celebrated theaters! This presentation is in celebration of National Friends of the Library Week!

Join the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum and Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) for a presentation on California’s Fire Ecology from an explorer and artist’s lens. Pyroscapes is the creative exploration of the fire landscape in Californian ecosystems, created by local artist and scientist, Cody Markelz. The project is part science, part data visualization, part art, and part personal story.

Pyroscapes are dynamic across time, space, and governmental jurisdictions. If you are a resident in California, you live in an active pyroscape. Let's talk about building a resilient pyro-culture to live alongside wildfire. In addition to a lecture, Cody will provide mini-illustrated zines discussing fire ecology principles. These mini-zines will be used as portable lecture notes for the field trip visiting an area that was recently burned. Cody will teach nature journaling observational skills in and around the burn area focusing on the fire history of that specific piece of ground.
